Too Ambitious?

Last night a colleague passed along the information that I am looked upon as "too ambitious" by other faculty members. I asked him what that meant and here is the explanation that I was given:

You volunteer for a lot of things and people don't like that. You have your hand in a lot of pots and people don't like that. You always go to the voluntary [Professional Developments] and people don't like that. You ask a lot of questions when presenters come in and people don't like that.

Um... what?! This is something that I have struggled with for... as long as I can remember. My father always teased me about being an overachiever. From him, it was in the most loving, worried-that-I-overextended-myself, kind of way... never mean-spirited.

Something about last night's conversation hit me hard.

In high school, I was teased (as many were) quite a bit. I was overweight, I had thinning hair, I had acne. Because in high school, it doesn't matter whether or not you've got a serious hormonal disorder that could adversely affect your life forever.

In high school, I was teased for caring about my grades. I sat in all Honors and AP classes due to my hard work. I sat alongside students... people I had called friends... who were there because it came easily to them. To me, it didn't. Me? I had to work at it. I had to stay up late studying and creating outlines and note cards.

In high school, I spent my evenings pouring over text books and class notes. I worked my BUTT off. These "friends" of mine constantly told me that I cared too much. I worked too hard.

What does that even mean?!

When it came time to graduate, I was told that I was making a dumb choice, taking the easy way out. "Who wants to be a teacher these days?" "Why would you do something so lazy?" "You're too smart to be a teacher!"

I am utterly perplexed by the comments of so many, but this is what I know.

I strive to be the best me that I can be.

I may not look the healthiest, but I love who I am.

I love that every morning, I wake up with a smile on my face.

I love that I drive to work, happily singing along with the radio.

I love that when I get here, I jump right into it and have a terrific rapport with my grade partners and floor-mates.

I love that at 8:40am, I get to see 24 smiling faces, all excited for what the day will bring.

I love that my students' parents all linger to talk to me and tell me about their child's growth and successes.

I love that in 10 very short months, I get to watch these 24 little faces grow and change and become readers! and mathematicians! and scientists! and historians!

I love my job. I will continue to love my job. I will strive to be the best teacher that I can be. If that means volunteering for extra PD, staying late, asking questions at meetings and during presentations, then so be it. I make no apologies for doing right by myself and my students.

And to those so-called high school "friends"... The easy way out is coasting through life, settling into something that comes naturally. That's the lazy way to do things. Try stretching yourself daily... try learning new things... try pushing your boundaries... share something with the world.

Shipping Out!

My husband and I have just finished packing for our cruise and we leave for the boat in... 19 minutes! Talk about LAST MINUTE! I hope we haven't forgotten anything!!

I can't be too upset with myself, as per usual... I got stuck at work late last night. There is just something so incredibly satisfying about engaging in rich conversation with colleagues with the same drive and passion. I know that many of you can relate!

Yesterday, to celebrate the end of summer school, my Principal and a few of my co-workers had a chicken wing party! Living in Connecticut, you really haven't lived until you've tried the wings at the Dew Drop Inn in Derby. I wish they had a website that I could link up to, but... check them out on Facebook. They have something like 80 different varieties of wings -- ALL ARE DELICIOUS! My favorite are Parmesan-Bacon-Garlic, Peanut Butter & Jelly (with a fluff dipping sauce!), and Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. I know, I know... they sound ridiculous, but NOMNOMNOM they are just... oh, so good! I won't even begin to pretend like I know how to explain how a combination of chicken and candy work, but they just do. Trust me! :)
REGARDLESS! While we were chowing down, we began to talk about the the school play for the coming year. During each of our 3 years under the PCAH Turnaround Arts Grant, we held a school production:

Year 1: The Wiz
Year 2: The Jungle Book
Year 3: Hairspray, Jr.

This year, we were planning to present The Little Mermaid, but made a switch to Annie, Jr. after learning about the new Jamie Foxx-Cameron Diaz movie.

Through our discussion we began to brainstorm the many ways we are able to integrate the play into our instruction as aligned with the CCSS and district curriculum for grades Pre-K through 8. Our discussion lasted for nearly THREE HOURS! We were unexpectedly productive, building off of one another and now we have been set to task -- as soon as I return from the cruise, I will be putting together a packet for our staff complete with arts vocabulary and ideas for lessons, units, and PBAs (Project Based Activities). I am so optimistic for this school year and really cannot wait to delve into it and share all of our ideas with you!
But now I'm curious! At this point through all of my training, substituting, and now teaching, I have working in 6 different school districts (over 20 schools total!) and have seen arts integration at all different levels. I'd love to hear about your arts integration experience. Answer the question below and feel free to give more info in the comments! I apologize in advance for delayed responses since I will be out of the country until August 2nd!

Also, don't forget to follow me here, on bloglovin, or on Instagram (Shoelaces_SweetFaces) before I get back on the 2nd. All followers by then will receive a FREEBIE of my completed Sight Word Assessment Pack!

Happy blogging, all and soak up all the sun you can! School will be back before we know it!! :)

Five for Friday Linky Party!

I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for  Five for Friday!

The hubs and I OFFICIALLY set sail tomorrow morning for the Bahamas! I cannot explain how happy I am to say that we are finally going! This will likely be the ONLY week that I have off this summer and Dave has had such a stressful few months at work, I'm just glad to help him get away from it all for a little while.

Before!
AFTER!

Me with my beautiful friend Alicia, on the right!

Last week I updated about the Run or Dye 5K. It was my FIRST EVER 5K and I am so proud to say that I DID IT! :) I have INCREDIBLE co-workers friends! They are extremely supportive of all of my goals and I couldn't be more blessed to have these people in my life!

On Sunday, we went to a Battle of the Sexes softball game in Bridgeport, CT. The local Triple-A team, Bridgeport Bluefish, hosted the world famous Brakettes softball team from Stratford, CT (my hometown!) They played with softball rules and the stadium was SOLD OUT! It was a BLAST! Tons of Battle of the Sexes trivia and games between innings. It was such a nice time with Dave and my in-laws. Clearly, Dave and I did not agree on which team should win... and if you look below, I think you'll be able to figure out just who came out on top.

HINT: Boys are STUPID... but we'll get'em next year!! ;)

The Dino Stomp from Go Noodle!

Who has heard of Go Noodle? I am OBSESSED! I am working on a more in-depth post/review, but if you use brain breaks in your classroom, you should DEFINITELY check it out! They have a huge variety of dances and activities for the kiddos to work on with plenty of goals -- energize, energy burn, calm down, etc... I love it and so do my kiddos! Best of all: It's FREE!! So take a second, click the link or the button on my left sidebar and head on over to check it out!!

I have been facing some insecurities lately. In talking with a friend of mine, I was able to explain that I am truly happy with the person I have and continue to grow into. We all have insecurities and, unfortunately, in this world... there are people who like to pick on and exploit those insecurities for their own gain. All I know is that I have to take time each day to reflect on all of my blessings. I am a lucky girl and I have to acknowledge that. I have been blessed in many ways and must not ever forget that. It's time to lift my head up high and CHOOSE HAPPY.

Me Time Monday

While browsing some of my favorite blogs, I came across One Extra Degree and her "Me Time Monday" linky party. Gahhhh!! I am very jealous. As I'm sure many of you agree, those of us who are still in school are definitely ready for the year to be over! We still have 2 and a half weeks left! 12. WHOLE. SCHOOL. DAYS. It seems like forever, but with all that's going on, I am sure that it will fly by!

In the coming weeks we've got our school play (Hairspray, Jr!), Kindergarten Graduation, 8th Grade Moving Up ceremony, end of year testing, 2 more Saturday school sessions, paperwork, report cards, and I have a classroom to pack up and move down the hall!
Needless to say, I. Am. STRESSED!

Tonight, I am kicking back with my husband and catching up on this season of Once Upon A Time. I cannot believe we didn't have time to watch a single episode this season! He keeps needling me because, like most of you, I'm sure, I cannot seem to step away from work! He even tried to hide the laptop, but we can all see how that one turned out! ;)

12 days.
12 days.
12 days.
12 days.
12. more. days.

So close.

Some of the things that I am looking forward to doing in my spare time are:
  • Painting and setting up my new home office
  • Reading on the beach
  • Sleeping on the beach
  • Picnicking on the beach
  • Basically, existing on the beach
  • Helping my sister-in-law with her new house!
  • Helping my good friend and grade partner with her new house!
  • Helping my BFF with her wedding planning
  • House hunting for the hubster and I!
  • Manicures that last more than a day
  • Vacation with my husband

Hopefully my future Me Time Monday posts will actually involve me taking some time.... for ME!

Well, I hope ya'll are enjoying your time off! Can't wait to join you! :)
